Scott McDermott believes Rangers have downgraded their defensive line this season by replacing Connor Goldson with Robin Propper.
The Dutchman was brought in during the summer transfer window in order to fill the void left by the Englishman.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (18 November), McDermott shared his thoughts on the Gers’ decision to sell Goldson.
“Goldson looks a better player than Robin Propper,” McDermott said.
“This goes back to Philippe Clement and the board talking about rebuilds and rejuvenating the squad, it wasn’t a rebuild, it was a downgrade.
“Robin Propper will be cheaper than Goldson in terms of wages and we were told before he signed that he was a captain before and he was going to come into the leadership group and be that Goldson replacement but he’s struggling to get a start”.
Rangers should have kept Connor Goldson
When Propper arrived at Ibrox, many likely expected the Dutchman to slot right into the gap left by Goldson but unfortunately, things haven’t quite panned out that way.
Admittedly, Goldson didn’t have the best of campaigns last season but it still felt like he had a lot to offer to the team.
Propper will undoubtedly be the cheaper option wage-wise, but in terms of quality, they’ve now sacrificed thanks to his exit and it’s raised questions about whether it was worthwhile.
The Gers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and are nine points adrift of both Celtic and Aberdeen.
If Goldson was still a member of the Belgian’s squad, he could have helped turn things around and perhaps even helped solidify their defence.
In the six years he was at the club he rarely put a foot wrong until 2023/24 and it felt like he was treated rather harshly by those involved with the club.
If things don’t turn around at Rangers soon, it could end up being curtains for Clement sooner than he’d like.
In other Rangers news, Andy Newport has shared the likelihood of the Gers making any permanent additions in January.
