Rangers put up a good fight in their Scottish League Cup final loss against Celtic on Sunday, but comments made by Robin Propper after the match are wide of the mark.

Although the Gers went 3-2 down in the 87th minute, Danilo scored a minute later to get his side back level and ultimately take the game to penalties.

However, they fell short at the final hurdle after Ridvan Yilmaz had his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel and the game finished 5-4 on spot-kicks.

After playing the full game, Propper spoke positively in his post-match press conference (quoted via PLZ Soccer) and admitted that he thought that despite losing the game, his side are closing the gap on Celtic.

“You could see we are not that far behind,” he said. “We feel we are getting closer.”

Robin Propper underestimates the work to be done at Rangers

There is no doubt that Rangers put on a much stronger display than many expected them to in the League Cup final on the basis of recent Old Firm showdowns.

However, the centre-back’s comments suggests that, amongst other things that need fixing, there is an mentality shift that needs to take place at Ibrox for real change to happen throughout the club.

Things have been wrong at Rangers both on and off the pitch this season and, although they are starting to show improvement with better results, and at times performances, Philippe Clement still has a way to take the club before he can convince supporters that he is up to the job as boss.

Although the players can feel proud of the tenacity they showed in Sunday’s game, it feels as though Propper has forgotten that his side didn’t win the game, something which should never be celebrated after an Old Firm derby.

Furthermore, one game where the Gers squad fired themselves up for the occasion, requires being backed up convincingly in the league before any comments of catching up can be made.

Rangers aren’t even second in the Scottish Premiership table and remain 11 points off Celtic in top spot which is a monumental gap in points.

Clement’s side can certainly be pleased with aspects of their performance on Sunday (15 December) but it is essential they start to show consistent improvement going forward in the league and prove they can catch up with their rivals by letting the results and the table do the talking.

In other Rangers news, Alan Hutton was shocked after what he was told about the wage bill at Rangers.
