'I'd say...' - Sky Sports journalist shares update on triple-Everton signing

Everton are not likely to be able to complete a trio of signings that would strengthen all three phases of the squad, says Alan Myers.

The Sky Sports journalist responded to a question via X on 26 July regarding moves for Toffees targets in midfield, attack and defence to express doubt over the chances of all three arriving at Goodison Park.

Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips has been linked since the start of the summer as Sean Dyche looks for a replacement for the now-Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana [Daily Mail, 28 May], while that sale has cleared the way to push Leeds United over a deal for winger Willy Gnonto [Sky Sports, 15 July], and the Toffees are said to be ready to jump and join the race to sign Lyon defender at short notice [Foot Mercato, 24 July].

But when asked about all three signing for Everton Myers replied: “I’d say unlikely”.

Jake O’Brien also liked at Everton alongside Leeds United and Manchester City men

TEAMtalk reported on 22 July that three signings might be on the way in short order with Phillips and Gnonto progressing alongside Jesper Lindstrom from Napoli.

The Danish winger has now been confirmed on loan with an option to make the deal permanent but discussions on the other two English-based additions have yet to progress that far.

O’Brien has seemed the least concrete of the names mentioned throughout, at least while Jarrad Branthwaite remains, so the Irish centre-back arriving with Phillips and Gnonto may not have been on the cards either way.

But with Myers now expressing doubt over the Gnonto deal (26 July) it may now be that Phillips is the most likely to be brought in.

Everton haven’t been backed to sign all three of the targets on their list.

The England international may not be the most popular option given his lack of football at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola and his disastrous loan to West Ham last season.

But he is said to be ready to work under Dyche who thinks he can revive his fortunes, and unless Tim Ireogbunam is slated to be a regular starter there is a decent-sized gap left by Onana.

Lesley Ugochukwu is a talented option at Chelsea who is expected to go on loan at Chelsea and probably won’t have the same sort of waged as the City man.

Foot Mercato reported on 13 July that the Toffees were in the hunt for the Stamford Bridge man, but he is just 20 whereas Phillips is much more experienced and has played in an international final.

Dyche and Thelwell will hope to make more additions in various areas, especially if more players are to leave.

In other Everton news, a Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit update has emerged with the Toffees facing a definite problem.
