'If you don't believe me...' - Robbie Savage uses Everton vs Man Utd claim to call for manager sacking

Erik ten Hag should be sacked because Manchester United’s record over their past 15 league games is worse than Everton, according to Robbie Savage.

The pundit used the Toffees as the benchmark for failure in his column for The Mirror on 4 October, arguing that despite not wanting to see “a good man sacked” the facts were pointing towards the inevitable.

Sean Dyche has seen his own job security called into question already this term as well after losing the first four games of the Premier League campaign, picking up a first win in the sixth against Crystal Palace on 28 September.

Savage said: “In their last 15 Premier League games, Everton have taken more points than Manchester United.

“If you don’t believe me, count them yourself – Everton 21, United 19. After their crazy 3-3 draw with Porto on Thursday night, since the start of last season United have conceded two or more goals on 31 occasions in all competitions – more times than any other Premier League club over the same period.

“And in their last five away games in Europe, United have conceded 17 goals, including four in Munich and Copenhagen. I offer those facts – not opinions, they are facts – as evidence of the tide going out on manager Erik ten Hag.”

Erik ten Hag to lose job for worse record than Everton?

It is clearly not a ringing endorsement of Dyche for his own recent record to be held up against the Old Trafford boss in disbelief.

There are plenty of Toffees fans who would have happily seen the Goodison Park boss fired already this season after the dismal start to the campaign.

But it is a measure of how his Everton teams interspersed miserable runs of form with outstanding hot streaks last season that they avoided relegation with ease despite two points deductions.

An excellent April meant drop danger was long gone by the final day, finishing the season with five wins from the final nine games, with two draws.

Dyche and Ten Hag look to be in a similar boat as it is hard to see either of them staying in their current jobs long-term.

The arrival of INEOS in Manchester surprisingly didn’t lead to the Dutchman moving on, while The Friedkin Group’s takeover at Everton won’t immediately see Dyche removed [GiveMeSport, 23 September] but it would be very unexpected for them to offer him a new deal once his current one expires in the summer.

The two sides came into this weekend’s fixtures only three points apart, and after multiple bids from United for Jarrad Branthwaite were rejected in the summer there hasn’t been much of a difference in the recent fortunes of either club.
