Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage have clashed over differing opinions after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was denied a penalty in Everton versus Newcastle United on Saturday (5 October).
The Toffees striker was brought down in the Magpies’ 18-yard box under a challenge from Dan Burn, and after a lengthy VAR review, referee Craig Pawson decided against awarding a spot-kick.
While Savage was adamant a penalty should have been awarded to Sean Dyche’s side, Sutton was having absolutely none of it as the duo hashed it out live on air.
Speaking live via BBC Radio 5 Live [5 October, 7:43pm], Sutton said: “It’s amazing because you’re supposed to be a football expert. Dan Burns gets his body in the way and Dominic Calvert-Lewin kicks him. You don’t know what you’re talking about. You think it should be a penalty?
Savage replied: “Correct me if I’m wrong. In the Euros, didn’t England get a penalty in the Euros for Harry Kane kicking a defender? Am I wrong? You’ve just got Gareth Southgate on speed dial. It’s a penalty – stonewaller.”
In response, Sutton said: “You know you’re just making that up. You don’t have to back Sean Dyche blindly because you spoke to him during the week. That’s just gutless from you. It wasn’t a penalty.”
Everton denied penalty decision against Newcastle United
Evertonians can have no complaints over the decision to award the Magpies a penalty after James Tarkowski dragged Sandro Tonali to the floor, but they certainly have a case here.
Arguments over this kind of incident will trundle on for weeks, especially if the Premier League eventually end up apologising for a wrong decision being made, but this case is not so black and white.
Similar decisions are made up and down the country so it is completely understandable to fans at Goodison Park frustrated, and feeling unfairly treated by the league’s officials.
The officials were slammed and harassed all night at Goodison Park, with moans being heard for delayed offside flags, soft fouls and both penalty decisions – Anthony Gordon missing his spot-kick.
VAR continues to be a massive talking point in the world of football, and with human error still very much a factor in the technology, controversial decisions will never leave the sport.
In other Everton news, a BBC pundit was baffled by an “incredible” moment as the Toffees drew 0-0 with Newcastle United.
