Pundit names Rangers as favourites in summer transfer race for 'Wanted' free agent

Rangers are favourites in the summer transfer race for former Stoke City striker Tyrese Campbell, according to Carlton Palmer.

Reports suggest Philippe Clement’s side want to sign the free agent to bolster their attack this summer, but faced competition from the likes of West Brom, Cardiff City and Sheffield United [Daily Mail, 18 July].

While Campbell has some family connections to the Baggies, Football League World pundit Palmer believes the history of the Gers puts them in pole position to secure his signature.

As quoted by Football League World on Friday (19 July) he said: “Tyrese Campbell is a wanted man, he has now become a free agent from Stoke City after he was unable to agree a contract with them.

“I know Glasgow Rangers are tight in terms of money to pay for a striker to come into the football club, but with a free agent that opens it up a little bit because then you’ve just got to cover his salary.

“I don’t know, his dad Kevin played at West Brom, and we all know the job Carlos Corberan did there, and maybe that would be a very good move for him at this time, as I think West Brom will be pushing for the play-offs next season.

“It’s interesting to see, Cardiff finished very respectably last season, can they push for a play-off place next season? But of course, Glasgow Rangers are a massive football club, so it will be interesting to see.

“For me, it would be between West Bromwich Albion and Glasgow Rangers, with Rangers being the favourite due to the past history.”

Are Rangers close to any new signings in the summer transfer window at Ibrox?

Most Rangers supporters would be in agreement that a new striker would be a necessity this summer ahead of the start of the Premiership campaign.

With speculation swirling around the future of Cyriel Dessers and question marks over both Danilo and Hamza Igamane, it feels as though Clement could do with one or two further attacking options in his ranks.

Campbell may not be proven in Scotland, but he has shown plenty of promise during his time in the Championship and that is shown by the number of clubs interested in securing his signature.

As Palmer suggests, the history of the Gers will surely appeal to the forward. The question mark will be whether or not the Light Blues have the financial power to immediately compete with English clubs when it comes to wages.

Hopefully, Clement will get his man if the Light Blues’ interest is genuine.
