BBC commentator Stephen Warnock was left shocked by the “bizarre” challenge James Tarkowski made on Sandro Tonali as Everton drew 0-0 with Newcastle on Saturday.
The Toffees stalwart dragged the Italy international to the floor in the 35th minute at Goodison Park, conceding a penalty.
Fortunately for the centre-back, Jordan Pickford managed to pull off an excellent save and prevented Anthony Gordon from scoring which was met by the elation of the home fans at Goodison Park, as well as Abdoulaye Doucoure’s.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (5 October, 18:39pm), Warnock shared his thoughts on what Tarkowski did.
“He throws him to the ground,” Warnock said.
“So that’s allowed now is it, that’s bizarre, I mean why would you ask the referee to make a decision or VAR, it’s incredible.
“I mean, we don’t get the beauty of listening into VAR but I’d love to know what they’re saying about that.”
Everton were the better team against Newcastle
Following their stellar 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last week, Everton were expected to put in a solid performance against the Magpies, which is exactly what they managed to do.
The Toffees were on the front foot for the vast majority of the game and looked to be the stronger of the two teams.
Many weren’t sure how the game would pan out for the Merseyside outfit due to the absence of Jarrad Branthwaite from Dyche’s squad however, as luck would have it, they didn’t really miss him all that much.
The centre-back has only just returned from a serious injury which has kept him sidelined since the start of the term.
However, after picking up yet another niggle, he was forced to be left out of the ‘ squad for the clash against the Magpies.
And, although Everton’s defence were bombarded with shots throughout the game, they still managed to hold down the fort fairly well.
If things continue as they’re going for the Merseyside outfit, it’s hard to see how the club will be dragged into a relegation battle and, as long as Dyche continues to “get things right” on the pitch, his job also seems secure, for now at least.
