'I'm Amazed' - Bobby Madden baffled by John Beaton controversy in Rangers loss v Celtic

Bobby Madden has been left amazed that John Beaton did not give Rangers a penalty against Celtic on Sunday.

Vaclav Cerny was clearly brought down inside the penalty but Beaton or the VAR team did not think it was worthy enough of a spot kick on 15 December at Hampden Park.

That saw the game heading to a penalty shootout with the score at 3-3 and the Hoops ended up winning it 5-4 and got their hands on the Scottish League Cup trophy.

Madden wrote on Instagram on 15 December: “This is a penalty kick. It doesn’t matter when the holding started, when it ended or what direction the players are moving. This is clear evidence of holding within the penalty area and I’m amazed this hasn’t been identified by VAR.

“Referee team had been excellent until that point. Difficult live, but that’s why VAR is there.”

Rangers robbed by a shocking decision against Celtic

The decision by Beaton and the VAR team not to award a penalty for the clear foul on Cerny during the Scottish League Cup final was a shocking oversight that arguably cost Gers the trophy.

With the score level at 3-3, the incident, where the attacker was clearly held in the penalty area, should have been a straightforward call for a penalty, potentially giving Rangers a chance to win before the shootout.

Madden, a former referee, highlighted this glaring error, emphasising that despite the referee team’s otherwise commendable performance, this was an egregious error, especially with VAR in place to correct such mistakes.

While painful for Gers fans to watch, it showcased a strong performance which could provide Philippe Clement with some leeway in terms of job security as the team’s effort and spirit were evident throughout the match.

It will be interesting to see how the club react in the coming weeks and hopefully, it should kickstart a cycle of wins.

In other Rangers news, David Edgar has issued a claim as the club have made yet another behind-the-scenes change.
