Stan Collymore sends instant dig to Rangers as Maeda wins Premier Sports Cup for Celtic

Stan Collymore took an instant swipe at Rangers after their Scottish League Cup final defeat to Celtic on Sunday.

Thanks to their Scottish League Cup victory, Brendan Rodgers’ men are now the most successful club in the United Kingdom with 119 trophies compared to the Gers’ 118 (Scottish Sun Sport, 15 December), which is something that Collymore was quick to point out.

The game itself was very end-to-end with the scores finishing 3-3 after extra time. Then came penalties and unfortunately for the Gers, Ridvan Yilmaz didn’t manage to slot his shot into the back of the net and Daizen Maeda slotted home the winning effort to ensure Celtic took the trophy 5-4 on penalties.

It was an up-and-down day for the Gers but in the end it was an agonising loss to their most fierce rivals.

Writing via his personal X account (15 December), Collymore shared his thoughts on the 79th Scottish League Cup final.

“Congratulations to the players, staff and supporters of Celtic Football Club,” he wrote. “A 119th major trophy.

“The most successful football club in Glaswegian, Scottish, British and European football history by major trophies won.”

Philippe Clement and Rangers couldn’t have done much more against Celtic

For what was arguably one of the most important games of the Gers’ season, Clement named a fairly strong side with the absence of Connor Barron being the only move that had question marks hanging over it.

About a month ago, fans and pundits wouldn’t have thought the Gers would have had a chance in the world to go and put up a decent fight in the final.

However, they really took it to their arch-rivals and managed to take the game to penalties after Danilo instantly netted their third goal within a minute of Celtic’s own entering the net to go 3-2 ahead.

As aforementioned, the game was very end to end and it felt like Clement made all the correct decisions for his team to prosper.

However, it evidently wasn’t meant to be and while they may have missed out on their first piece of silverware this season, there’s still plenty of time left in the campaign for them to add some trophies to their cabinet and get over this defeat.
