Billy Dodds was left fuming at Nico Raskin after the part he played in Celtic’s goal against Rangers to take them 2-1 up in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday.
The Belgian played a poor ball towards Leon Balogun who couldn’t get to it before Daizen Maeda did, which ended in the Japan international coolly slotting the ball home.
The midfielder has been in impressive form over the last few weeks but he seemed somewhat off the pace in the Gers’ heartbreakingdefeat against the Bhoys at Hampden Park on 15 December, despite being chosen to start by his manager.
The game ended in Celtic’s favour after Ridvan Yilmaz missed Rangers’ fourth penalty of the shoot-out, which led to the Bhoys beating the Ibrox outfit 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 3-3.
Speaking live on BBC Radio Scotland (15 December, 17:00), Dodds shared his thoughts on the incident.
“Rangers, [Nico] Raskin, I don’t know, what’s he thinking?” Dodds said.
“Everything they were doing right in the first half, just clear the danger and tries to knock it to [Leon] Balogun but [Kaizen] Maeda is onto it in a flash, he’s through on goal he does brilliantly and then he gets it under control and lashes it home.
“Brilliant from him but Rangers were terrible in their choice-making there when it came to just keeping the ball safe.”
Nico Raskin needs to refind his best form for Rangers
Even though the game ended in Celtic’s favour, it feels like fans couldn’t have asked for a more end-to-end game.
About a month ago, many likely expected Celtic to walk all over Philippe Clement’s men but thanks to their recent impressive form, it feels like they’ve found a new lease of life, even if they have just lost the final.
It was a very close game and if Yilmaz hadn’t missed his spot kick, things would have looked an awful lot brighter for Clement and his men.
As aforementioned, over the last few weeks, Raskin has been one of the most reliable members of Clement’s team but his performance against Celtic on 15 December wasn’t his best outing of the campaign.
If the Gers want to boost their title chances and try to claw their way back into the fight, they’ll have to get over the defeat against Brendan Rodgers’ men and hope that the Belgian can re-find his best form once again.
