'Sensible' - Andy Newport names 'Obvious Choice' to replace Clement at Rangers

Andy Newport believes Derek McInnes is the “obvious choice” to replace Philippe Clement at Rangers if he’s relieved of his duties.

The Belgian has been under constant scrutiny this term due to the losses against Celtic and Aberdeen and the fact that the Gers are third in the Scottish Premiership, nine points adrift of the leading duo.

Writing for the Daily Record (17 November), journalist Newport shared his thoughts on Rangers’ managerial situation.

“Derek McInnes seems the obvious choice [to replace Clement],” he wrote.

“As a former Rangers player, he knows the club and the standards demanded inside out. It may not be the kind of pick that will excite every punter but it’s the sensible one in the circumstances”.

As has been the case for most of the 2024/25 season, Clement’s role within the Rangers team has been put under a magnifying glass.

While some of the Gers’ performances against the lower-ranked teams in the Scottish Premiership have proved their dominance, when it comes to high-pressure games against the likes of Celtic and Aberdeen, they’ve crumbled.

To be this far behind Celtic is bad enough but to be adrift of the Dons, even accounting for their surprise start, is frankly unforgivable and Clement needs to see a vast improvement.

The Belgian may have led his team to two wins in the Europa League against FCSB and Malmo, but one good win shouldn’t be enough to patch up the string of bad performances they’ve put in.

Only time will tell what John Gilligan will do but if the Gers are beaten by Celtic in the final in December, it’s hard to see how Clement will be able to keep his job.
