Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a setback that will further anger Ange Postecoglou as Wilson Odobert has required surgery to prolong his injury absence.
As reported in The Standard [17 November], the club released an official statement to confirm Odobert, 19, has undergone an operation on his right hamstring.
The club will closely assess when the winger – signed from Burnley in the summer for £25million – can return, having played just four minutes since mid-September.
Spurs said through their official media channels: “We can confirm that Wilson Odobert underwent surgery to his right hamstring yesterday (Saturday 16th November).
“The 19-year-old will continue to be closely monitored by our medical team to determine when he can return to training.”
Tottenham suffer new blow as Wilson Odobert has surgery
While the jury remained out on Odobert when he arrived due to his rawness and unproven consistency at Premier League level, many Tottenham fans were excited to see him blossom in North London.
Since scoring for Burnley on 12 August in his final appearance for the Clarets, Odobert has made just two starts, which came just after his signing against Everton and Newcastle United – he has since struggled with injury issues.
In the past 365 days, as shown by Fotmob data, Odobert was brought in for his ability to carve out chances, attempting more shots than 90% of players in a similar position across Europe’s top leagues.
A stark contrast however shows he ranks almost rock-bottom in terms of defensive actions – though of all the systems out there at present, Postecoglou’s high-risk offensive strategy would appear to benefit Odobert’s style far more than most.
The French Under-21 and Olympic international has, on his sporadic appearances for Spurs when fit, maintained an xG ratio of 0.41 [Sofascore] – which further demonstrates his capability to create a sniff at goal out of nothing.
Postecoglou is a coach who will throw his eggs into one basket in playing to his team’s strengths. Spurs’ attacking record tops that of Premier League rivals with 23 goals despite ranking 10th in the table, so the Australian’s attitude would likely be to favour the likes of Odobert who can further add to that.
For a teenage talent like Odobert, he does not seem overawed, his confidence outlined by his remarkable stats on progression with the ball. According to FBRef, the youngster has averaged 4.5 take-ons per game within the past year, an improvement on 99% of comparable players in his position.
Identified as a coachable unpolished diamond who can serve exactly how Spurs want to play, Postecoglou will be left devastated by the prolonged absence Odobert will now endure on the sidelines.
In other Tottenham news, a deal for an England international could now be left solely in the hands of Daniel Levy.
