Steve Nicol has named the one condition he would be happy to see Everton relegated – and it is dependant on rivals Liverpool’s fate.

Nicol spent 13 years of his playing career at Liverpool and, despite his affiliation with the red half of Merseyside, has no ill will with the Blues.

The 62-year-old appeared on ESPN [12 September] and was presented with the theory that a club’s league position after three matches is 40 per cent likely to be their final position.

That means Liverpool would win the Premier League title this year and Everton would be relegated to the Championship.

Asked about that possibility come next May, Nicol said: “It’s always difficult to hang your hat on the statistics.

“I certainly wouldn’t want Everton to get relegated, but if that’s the deal – that Liverpool win the title and they go down – then absolutely, I’ll take it.”

Everton relegation prospects refuse to go away

Everton seem bound to the Premier League in recent years – no matter how close the club comes to relegation they always manage to find a way to stay up.

The 2022/23 season was about as close as it gets for the Toffees, relying on an Abdoulaye Doucoure goal on the final day of the season to retain their Premier League status at the expense of Leeds United and Leicester City.

Sean Dyche is no stranger to the situation the club finds themselves in. At this stage last year the Blues had also lost their opening three fixtures but secured a comfortable fifteenth-place finish, even with points deductions.

However, there are only so many times that a club the size of Everton can flirt with relegation, and this time round feels different with Dyche under immense pressure to find results fast, with a difficult run of fixtures ahead.

An away trip to Aston Villa with several key players missing, it doesn’t look good for Everton heading into the Premier League restart and it will take a tactical masterclass from Dyche to leave Villa Park with all three points or, at the very least, a share of the spoils.

Liverpool winning the league title on top of relegation for the Blues is the definition of the worst-case scenario for the Everton faithful. The mere fact that thought has been uttered into the universe will disgruntle an already depleted fanbase.
