Philippe Clement left Stephen McGinn “shocked” with his decision to not make a first-half change in Rangers’ clash with Kilmarnock.

The Light Blues returned from the international break with a 1-0 defeat at Rugby Park on Sunday (20 September) with Marley Watkins’ late goal the difference between the two sides.

While the Gers capitulated in the second half of the showdown, their first-half display was also nowhere near good enough and BBC Sportsound pundit McGinn felt Clement could have hooked Propper.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Sunday (20 October, 12:45) he said: “I’m just shocked that nothing has changed, everything’s the same.

“You don’t have to wait until halftime. You could actually take him off Robin Propper, you’ve got Leon Balogun on the bench. If he continues to lose this battle, Kilmarnock will win here.”

What happened to Rangers manager Philippe Clement at Ibrox?

It was slightly worrying that Clement didn’t appear to think there was too much wrong with his side’s first-half display, at least publically.

The Belgian refused to make any changes to his side in the first 45 minutes and then continued to send the same XI back out onto the field for the second period. Either the Gers manager is naive or far too stubborn to admit his mistakes.

While the Light Blues don’t have loads of options on the bench with Ianis Hagi suspended and Danilo still making his way back from injury, there was enough quality waiting on the sidelines that he could have called on to provide a spark.

As manager of Rangers, Clement simply has to be proactive and make those big decisions, even if it runs the risk of embarrassing a player. Supporters will want to see him be braver in the coming weeks, especially with some big games on the horizon.
