Michael Stewart was stunned after St Mirren were not awarded a penalty during Rangers’ 2-1 win at Ibrox on Sunday (27 October).
Mohamed Diomande and Alex Gogic cancelled each other out with first-half goals before the Saints had a penalty call waved away by referee Calum Scott in the second half.
Neraysho Kasanwirjo looked to collide with striker Toyosi Olusanya inside the penalty area, but with the referee unmoved by the incident, the Gers were eventually able to go on and secure all three points.
Speaking via BBC Sportscene on Sunday (27 October), Stewart said: “The contact is not immediately obvious, but closer up, you can see that Kasanwirjo catches Olusanya, and when you’re spinning like that and knocked, that is a foul.
“It knocks him off balance and that should have been awarded as a penalty kick. The referee pulls the game back to where Raskin pulls down a St Mirren’s player, but I’m surprised it wasn’t given.”
Rangers lucky to win three points against St Mirren?
Philippe Clement will certainly have breathed a sigh of relief after claiming all three points against the team just two points above the bottom of the Scottish Premiership table.
The Gers made hard work of the result, however, which will not do anything to alleviate any of the current concerns over the manager at Ibrox.
Maintaining their six-point gap behind Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table, the Light Blues are still within touching distance of the Scottish Premiership title race, but performances will need to improve quickly.
With a clash against high-flyers Aberdeen up next, travelling to the Pittodrie Stadium on Wednesday 30 October, this next opponent is far more likely to pounce on any defensive errors.
Robin Propper was once again in the spotlight, being replaced after 61 minutes on the pitch, and Clement cannot afford any defensive blunders when they face the Dons next.
In other Rangers news, an 82% ace can become a regular under Clement after showing “flashes of quality” in a recent clash.
