Newcastle United’s board are keen to back Eddie Howe despite a dismal run of form in the Premier League which has led to pressure on his position.
This is according to former Man United, Sunderland and Aston Villa scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that they are keen to stick with Howe as the boss has “credit in the bank”.
He continued by clarifying that the board are aware of the difficulties they faced in the transfer market and how they have affected the season so far, and are prepared to give some leeway.
Following their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the Magpies have now gone five league games without a victory and have plummeted to 12th place.
After nine games of the Premier League season, Howe’s side have picked up three wins, three draws and three defeats, collecting 12 points.
Meanwhile, there have been growing concerns about the level of their performances regardless of the scores, with several players struggling to hit their best levels.
Brown admitted that the blame will rest on the manager if performances and results do not improve, but clarified the board remain in favour of the current boss as things stand.
Newcastle United board to back Eddie Howe amid growing pressure
Football Insider revealed on 23 October that the Newcastle hierarchy are not concerned about recent reports linking Howe with a move to Manchester United.
That faith and loyalty both from and towards the boss backs up Brown’s claims as the well-connected expert insisted the club remain confident in their manager’s ability to lead them forward.
“I don’t think there are concerns about Howe’s position yet,” he told Football Insider.
“I think it would be harsh to judge them against teams like Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
“But the expectations are definitely up there, both from the fans and the board.
“However, I’m told there is an acceptance that the transfer window did not go as planned and that has, no doubt, had an effect on how they’ve started the season.
“They’re in a difficult position and could go one way or the other, but they’re backing Howe.
“With the players they’ve got, the likes of Alexander Isak, they’ve certainly got the ability.
“Results will need to turn around though because going five games without a win isn’t good enough when you want to challenge and qualify for Europe.
“Howe has done a good job since he took over there, though, and he’s got plenty of credit in the bank with the fans and the owners.”
