Rangers face being eight points behind Celtic by the time they next take the field in what constitutes an “incredible” situation at this stage of the season, says Kris Boyd.

The Sky Sports pundit told Sun Sport’s Go Ballistic on 9 September that Dundee United will fancy their chances of making the situation worse for Philippe Clement with an upset at Tannadice on 15 September.

Boyd can’t believe how far off Brendan Rodgers’ side Rangers have already slipped after the Old Firm derby defeat, and is also surprised by how strong The Tangerines have been so far.

Boyd said (22m 50s): “Dundee United vs Rangers. Rangers’ away form’s no been great has it? They’re going to have to start winning games of football, they could be eight points behind Celtic by the time they kick off on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s incredible to think that after five games they could be eight points behind, and it’s not going to be easy because I had Dundee United down to struggle and I think I’ve called that one wrong, because Jim Goodwin, fantastic start they’ve had, they’ll fancy their chances.

“They’ll think they can get an upset here with beating Rangers.”

Rangers adrift of Celtic after Old Firm capitulation

After the 3-0 loss at Parkhead heading into the international break Clement’s side should probably forget about what is happening on the other side of the city for now and concentrate on getting themselves back on track.

The away derby was probably the last fixture the Belgian would have wanted straight out of a frustrating transfer window that may have actually taken his side backwards from last term [Michael Stewart, 2 September].

Extensive focus has been drawn to the manager’s job security and the potential exit of captain James Tavernier, amid interest from multiple Turkish sides and a pair of Qatari clubs [HITC, 6 September] after he was abused outside Ibrox following the Celtic loss.

The hope has to be that Clement and his players can successfully avoid generating any more negative noise for a few weeks, with the addition of Deadline Day signing Nedim Bajrami potentially important.

But with Rangers going into the Tannadice clash trailing Dundee United by a place and a point that is clearly easier said than done at the moment.

More dropped points will only turn up the heat further around the club and increase fears that the season is going to be a painful one all round.

In other Rangers news, the door appears to have opened for a shock Ibrox return for a Clement favourite.
