Rangers may no longer be looking for a transfer fee to allow James Tavernier to complete a last-minute Ibrox exit, according to Mark Guidi.
The Light Blues skipper has reportedly caught the attention of clubs in both Turkey and Qatar in the wake of the Gers’ Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic before the international break [Graeme Bailey, 6 September].
Although the Gers were looking for a transfer fee for the 32-year-old earlier in the transfer window the Sunday Mail’s Guidi has suggested Philippe Clement could now let him quit Ibrox for nothing.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (9 September, 1:12:30) he said: “Rangers may well have been looking for a fee for him a month ago.
“Maybe not so now, maybe there have been talks between the player and the club behind the scenes saying please, let me get an exit here, let’s see what he can do.
“For Rangers, it gets him off of the wage bill as well, he’s possibly the biggest earner at the club right now and I think they’ve got a readymade replacement in Dujon Sterling anyway to step into that right-back role.”
Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?
For some pundits and supporters, it already makes very little sense that the Light Blues would be willing to let Tavernier depart when they are unable to sign a replacement themselves.
That decision will only be more baffling if the Gers don’t even pocket a transfer fee for Tavernier’s services, especially considering he has been a regular fixture in Clement’s starting XI so far this season.
Yes, getting one of the biggest wages in the club off of the bill would be a boost to Rangers ahead of the January transfer window, but it would do very little to benefit Clement and his team between now and then.
If the Gers do sell their skipper in the coming days, they simply have to ensure that his exit is completed on their terms and for a big transfer fee, otherwise this transfer call will make absolutely no sense.
It will be interesting to see how those in charge at Ibrox approach the next couple of days of the season.
