Keith Jackson has mooted the possibility that Nils Koppen may now have the authority to sack Philippe Clement from his role as Rangers boss thanks to his promotion.
The Belgian has been under some rightful scrutiny this season with fans and pundits alike calling for his head due to the Gers’ underperformance.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (20 November) journalist Jackson shared his thoughts on Koppen’s promotion to technical director this week, saying he may now have the jurisdiction to make an “inevitable” decision to sack Clement next month.
“I just wonder, if this kind of reassignment for Nils Koppen gives him the authority/position to pull the trigger on a manager,” he said.
“I wonder if this is a mechanism that has been set up in order to take care of what needs to happen or what becomes inevitable if December goes the way that many including myself thinks it will for Rangers”.
Philippe Clement needs to prove his worth to Rangers in December
The final month of 2024 is undoubtedly going to be the most important of Clement’s tenure as the Rangers boss.
He’s been let off with losing the first Old Firm Derby of the season and even succumbing to a loss against Aberdeen but if he’s beaten in the league or loses the cup final against Celtic, it’s going to be hard for the Gers to justify keeping him in his role.
The 2024/25 season so far has been way below par for Rangers with many fans expecting them to mount a decent title challenge before the season kicked off.
Of course, not all the blame can be placed upon the shoulders of Clement but it’s his tactical choices that tell the team how to play.
He’s also the decision maker on who should start and who should be benched which is why he’s become a sort of fall guy for the Gers of late.
If things don’t improve in December or if they somehow get worse, it will surely be curtains for Clement.
