Insider: Big Erik Ten Hag update tonight

Man United boss Erik ten Hag is now one defeat away from the sack even if he oversees a string of wins, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at United during their most successful period and remains very well-connected at the club, exclusively told Football Insider that, regardless of the number of wins he picks up, it would only take one defeat for his head to roll.

This comes following United’s 2-1 victory against Brentford at Old Trafford which saw Ten Hag’s side find their first win in six games.

That win has inspired renewed hope that United can put together a strong run of form, but reservations remain given previous false dawns for the boss.

The Red Devils have been handed a favourable run of fixtures, with games against Fenerbahce, West Ham, PAOK, Leicester and Ipswich Town all coming in their next seven.

However, should they suffer a shock defeat in any of these games, it could spell an early end to the manager’s time at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag ‘one defeat away’ from Man United sack

Brown previously told Football Insider that the club could wait until closer to the January transfer window before making their final decision on Ten Hag’s future.

Now, the former United scout who also spent a period as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two insisted that the manager’s position has become unstable and it would take more than a few wins to turn his fortunes around.

“Just winning a few games won’t be enough and he’ll know that,” he told Football Insider.

“You can win three games on the bounce, but one shock defeat and that pressure will be back.

“Every time you lose a game at Manchester United, you’re under the kosh. That’s always been the case. You’re always one defeat away.

“So it’s good to win games, and he needs to win games, that’s the only way he’ll be able to keep his job, but even that might not be enough.

“They’ve got a good run of games coming up, but that only increases the pressure.

“We’ve been in this position before where they get all three points from a game and look like they can push on, but then they lose again.

“All it takes is one loss for the crowd to turn and all of a sudden a decision has to be made.”
