Ruben Amorim is being forced to deal with lacklustre recruitment which has become a “big problem” at Man United, according to their former chief scout.
Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that recent issues are a result of the level of players brought to the club in recent years.
In the 11 years since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013, United have hired seven different managers, all of whom have suffered similar issues.
Jose Mourinho was outspoken about the club’s transfer policy during his time in charge in his famous “see where they play, how they play, if they play” rant in 2018.
However, six years later, the recruitment issues remain a problem and have seen Amorim’s side stutter, having won just four of his nine games in charge so far.
Brown has criticised the amount of money spent on players who have not been good enough to prove they deserve to play for Man United.
This, it has been said, is the reason for the club’s constant struggles to be competitive in the league despite changing the managers in an attempt to turn things around.
Man United recruitment slammed after Ruben Amorim twist
Amorim, meanwhile, is unlikely to be heavily backed in the January window as a result of the money spent previously which has put the club in a precarious financial position.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level recruitment and has worked closely with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ron Atkinson, insisted that the current recruitment team at Old Trafford have made Amorim’s job harder than it should be.
“I think the recruitment has been a big problem,” he told Football Insider.
“There are players there who shouldn’t be anywhere near a Manchester United side who are looking to be successful in terms of winning trophies.
“The money spent on bringing these players in and paying their wages his been astronomical.
“Look at Antony for example and how much they spent on him – he is nowhere near good enouggh.
“The two lads up front, Hojlund and Zirkzee, aren’t good enough to lead the line in a competitive side, but cost the club over £100million between them.
“Some of these players may improve, but they have to deal in definites, not maybes.
“Amorim has given all of these players chances, but he’s got to know what his best team is, and it’s a problem that there is no clear idea of that.
“So many players at the club simply aren’t good enough to make you think yeah, he’s a nailed-on starter.
“The manager’s priority has to be to work out what his best team is, and to sort out the defence, but it’s a job that has been made harder than it should be by the players they have brought in before him.”
