Paul Robinson believes Rodrigo Bentancur’s punishment deserves to stand despite Tottenham appealing against the FA’s decision.
The Spurs midfielder was handed a seven-game domestic ban after using a racial slur about teammate Son Heung-min, having also been fined £100,000 and ordered to take part in an education programme.
Ange Postecoglou confirmed that the club has appealed against the decision, with Son already receiving an apology from his teammate and has forgiven him [BBC Sport].
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I can understand why they wanted to appeal the decision because of the time he’s missed through injury. But with crime comes consequence and it can’t be allowed to happen.
“People, whether it be in football or society, there is punishment for what he’s done. Son and the club can say that they’ve accepted his apology but there’s a consequence.
“From the club’s point of view, you can understand them appealing but the stipulation from the FA says that a punishment could be anywhere between six and 12 games. So, looking at it like that, the punishment is on the lighter side.
Tottenham set to miss Rodrigo Bentancur as seven-game ban emerges
“I think he’s right to be banned. We’ll wait to see the outcome of the appeal but the punishment has to stand.”
Postecoglou will take Bentancur’s absence a huge blow, given he has started seven of Spurs’ Premier League matches and continues to impress in other competitions.
The Uruguayan has become an important figure in North London, and while he can still play in the Europa League, Postecoglou will now have to choose from Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr in midfield.
With a busy winter period upcoming, it will feel as though the midfielder is back in no time, but Postecoglou may struggle to switch his midfielders around as much as he may have hoped.
In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou was spotted becoming furious after what happened in Manchester City v Spurs.
