Rangers view Dujon Sterling’s long-term future at right-back and not in central midfield, according to Chris Jack.

In his Rangers Review column, Jack claims that Philippe Clement cannot see himself building his midfield around a player with fitness issues.

The 24-year-old has made two league starts this season with his other four appearances coming off the bench.

Jack wrote: “A different profile of midfielder and a more natural No.6 was the wish of many supporters during the transfer window but Clement must now go with what he has as Kieran Dowell also looks to force his way into contention and youngsters Cole McKinnon and Bailey Rice wait for their chances.

“Right now, that trio are not serious contenders for starting slots on a sustained basis and Raskin is the natural back-up option to the pairing of Barron and Mohamed Diomande that has been established since those early days of the summer.

“The other alternative, Dujon Sterling, remains in a positional limbo and Clement cannot build a midfield base around a player that he has durability doubts over. Regardless, it is believed that Sterling’s long-term future is seen at right-back.”

Dujon Sterling can be James Tavernier’s successor at Rangers

Given his history of fitness concerns, particularly when deployed in central midfield, it’s understandable why Clement might hesitate to build his midfield around Sterling.

Central midfield demands not just skill but also physical robustness to cover ground, tackle and maintain possession under pressure, aspects where the 24-year-old’s fitness issues could compromise performance consistency.

However, at right-back, Sterling’s pace, defensive acumen and ability to contribute offensively could see him thrive, especially as a potential successor to James Tavernier.

Here, the physical demands might be more manageable, allowing the Englishman to focus on his strengths without the intense midfield grind.

For Sterling to secure this role long-term, addressing his fitness through rigorous training and perhaps tailored recovery programs is crucial, ensuring he can meet the physical rigours of top-flight football at a position where his skills would be most beneficial.

It remains to be seen whether or not he’s able to give Clement what he wants in the first team.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement and the Gers board have held a meeting over a January transfer over the past few days.
