Cyriel Dessers is in line for a new boost at Ibrox now that Danilo is “fit again” at Rangers, according to Billy Dodds.

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward is expected to return to action after the October international break having undergone a second surgery on a knee injury that has plagued him in his time at Ibrox [David Edgar, 27 September].

While Danilo’s return may put Dessers’ starting place under threat, Daily Record pundit Dodds believes the Nigerian international needs some more competition at the top end of the pitch this season.

Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (12 October) he said: “I’ve spoken about his [Dessers’] mindset before, because you can go under as an Old Firm player if you’re not performing and the crowd gives you a bit of stick.

“Dessers, to his credit, has come back fighting before but you still need more than one guy so you’re not thinking, ‘Oh well, even if I don’t perform to my best, I’m still going to play’.

“It will be good for him that Danilo’s fit again, it’s great that he’s there for competition. That’s the difference at the club now compared to when I played at Ibrox.

“Right now Dessers knows he’ll play every week.”

What has happened to Rangers striker Danilo at Ibrox?

So far this season, the only real challenger for Dessers’ starting position in Glasgow has been Hamza Igamane and it has been obvious that the Moroccan forward isn’t yet ready to play week in and week out in the Premiership.

Igamane is incredibly raw and while he has had some excellent cameos off the bench, he has looked all over the place when named in the starting XI.

That inconsistency has meant that Philippe Clement has stood by Dessers.

The Nigerian forward has been consistently improving over the course of his time at Ibrox, but he isn’t the perfect centre-forward and still missed far too many chances. Having Danilo to help shoulder that burden will be a boost for both the Gers and Dessers himself.

Hopefully, when the Brazilian gets fit once again, he will avoid injury for an extended period.

It is doing neither him nor the Gers any good to have him sidelined every few weeks and he now has to try and put a consistent run of games together.
