Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea are to blame for Liverpool being unable to loan new goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to Bournemouth.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – defended the current loan rules, insisting they prevent clubs from hoarding talent.
Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (21 August) that Liverpool have an agreement in principle to sign Mamardashvili from Spanish club Valencia.
It was also revealed that it is increasingly likely the goalkeeper will stay on loan Valencia for the rest of the season as part of the deal.
Bournemouth had been linked with a loan deal for the Georgia international, but Premier League rules mean clubs are not allowed to loan stars to another top-flight club after signing them in the same window.
Wyness reveals real reason for Liverpool transfer confusion
Premier League sides are only allowed two loans from the top flight at the same time, and a maximum of four temporary signings across the season.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This rule started because of Chelsea under Abramovich.
“They were hoarding players, keepers in particular, and loaning them out to other clubs.
“It wasn’t fair that a club having loan players in lots of sides were having such a big impact.
“The loan rules have been tightened up to stop an infiltration of too many players from one club across the league.
“That was put in place 10 or 15 years ago, and it’s been proven to be the right decision.
“It helps clubs become as singular and insular as possible to help academy talents come through.
“While the loan market is there for a reason, it’s best if it’s not too much between Premier League clubs.
“I think the balance is right at the moment.”
