Craig Bellamy claims it is “just the numbers” as to why Rangers man Tom Lawrence has not been included in his Wales squad.

Lawrence recently revealed he had spoken with Bellamy about potential future inclusion in the Wales fold, but Bellamy decided against calling him up for matches against Iceland and Montenegro.

The 30-year-old has been in positive recent form at Ibrox but has not represented his nation since March 2021.

Bellamy said, as quoted by The Independent [8 October]: “It’s just the numbers. I have a certain amount of numbers I can go to.

“Tom is definitely a player I really like, but at this present moment there’s one or two players I’ve put in those positions.”

Lawrence had held out hope of returning to the international fold, having scooped 23 senior caps since 2015.

Brennan Johnson, Harry Wilson and Nathan Broadhead are among those to have been picked ahead of the experienced Light Blues ace, with Bellamy forced to carefully consider his options.

The report in The Independent had suggested that Lawrence’s part in the serious car crash which had left former Derby County teammate Richard Keogh with a serious injury in 2019 had meant the Welsh FA had not taken kindly to his inclusion in the national team.

This is something Bellamy denies, and insists it is purely a footballing matter – this will hopefully inspire Lawrence to sustain his form in a blue shirt in order to make a return in a red one as quickly as possible.

He had been one of the shining lights in a disappointing European contest at Ibrox last week [3 October], in which Lyon grabbed a convincing 4-1 win out of Philippe Clement’s side.

A third international break beckons next month, with Wales taking on Turkiye and then Iceland once again.

In other Rangers news, another member of the club’s hierarchy could leave before Christmas.
