‘It’s really poor’: Gary Neville expresses frustration at Tottenham player despite win v Manchester United

Tottenham slapped down a sorry Manchester United side on Sunday at Old Trafford by recording a comfortable 3-0 win.

From back to front, many Spurs players shone brightly as Ange Postecoglou’s side have since reacted well to that north London derby defeat against Arsenal several weeks ago.

Inside a few minutes, Brennan Johnson was scoring again for Spurs, and in truth, it should have been more after 45 minutes.

The big talking point in the first half wasn’t Johnson’s goal, but Bruno Fernandes’ straight red card after his alleged high challenge on James Maddison.

That just made matters worse for Manchester United because they were already under the cosh and they should have been further behind.

It also needs to be remembered that Tottenham were without their captain Son Heung-min, who was injured, with loan signing Timo Werner coming into the XI.

The German himself should have added to Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke’s goals, but once again, his poor play in the final third let him down.

On one occasion, he went through one v one, but he passed the ball straight to Andre Onana, but it was his second-half effort that frustrated Gary Neville, as he told Sky Sports Premier League (29/09/24 at 6:00 pm).

After racing down the left flank, including beating his man, he had an ample chance to find several Spurs players inside the box, but he somehow beat them all and gave possession away to Manchester United.

Neville was pretty clear in his thoughts about Werner and how he was ‘really poor’ because the home side were having their best spell at that moment.

Timo Werner criticised despite Tottenham’s win at Manchester United

“It’s really poor form Werner,” said Neville. “He does well in his first part, but in the last part, he has to find the white shirts. It gives Manchester United a little chance to attack here.”

Mikey Moore should start ahead of Timo Werner

The Spurs teenager came on in the second half for Werner and he looked far better than his senior teammate.

You wonder, with Europa League football kicking in again in midweek, then another Premier League fixture before the international break, is there a chance for Mikey Moore to start?

Especially if Son is still injured, you feel this is Moore’s chance to be handed a go because he looks far better than Werner.

You can just see Werner starting the next two games and continuing to miss those big chances because he did it at Chelsea and it isn’t changing at Hotspur Way.
