Chelsea have agreed a significantly lower sleeve sponsorship deal than the agreement they had in place two seasons ago.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the west London club’s deal with new sleeve sponsor Fever is worth between £6-8million.
Chelsea announced the sponsorship deal with the entertainment discovery platform ahead of their opening-day clash against Manchester City on 18 August.
Fever’s logo will feature on the men, women and academy players’ kits for the entirety of the current campaign.
But the new agreement is worth much less than the £20million-a-year sleeve sponsorship deal Chelsea signed in 2022 with WhaleFin before the crypto company terminated the deal midway through the 2022-23 season.
Chelsea struggling to land lucrative sponsorship deals
Borson suggested it’s currently a difficult time for clubs looking to land lucrative sponsorship deals in a bid to boost their commercial revenue.
“I think it’s indicative of a couple of things,” Borson told Football Insider.
“In 2022-23, they were getting the best part of £20million from crypto company WhaleFin and that was right at the top of the market.
“The new deal is thought to be around a third of that, around about £6-8million, potentially with some bonuses if they were to qualify for the Champions League.
“But clearly, it’s a very big down round for the sale of that property.
“It’s also come quite late in terms of its confirmation.
“I would think that it does not appear on replica product right now, unless it’s added in the next batch of printing, which is another negative to the deal.
“I think there is just a general indication across sponsorship spending that these are difficult times.”
