Newcastle are now trying to sign 'Marc Guehi alternative' - pundit

Newcastle United should be looking at alternatives to Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as they seek to bolster their defender before the end of the transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie isn’t sure whether the 24-year-old England international is keen on a move to St James’ Park.

Football Insider revealed (August 23) that Newcastle United are continuing to monitor Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi after their fourth bid for Guehi was rejected.

Palace have set a £70 million asking price for their star defender, and Newcastle have yet to meet it, with their latest offer being £65 million, including add-ons.

Guehi has started and captained both of Palace’s Premier League games so far this season but continues to be linked with a move away.

The defender’s value only rose throughout the summer due to some stellar performances for England as they reached the Euro 2024 final.

“They’re looking at alternative options now, aren’t they? I think it’s done”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I don’t know if (Marc) Guehi has fought his corner for Newcastle, I don’t know if he’s wanting to go there because I’d have been fighting if I wanted to go there.

“I don’t know. Maybe his agent or his wife wants him to stay in London, I don’t know the answer.

“He’s just burst onto the scene, at the Euros he was wonderful, played brilliantly and now he’s the man he can go where he wants.

“I think Newcastle are a club on the up, if they want to build a team around the big man it would be a good idea.

“Eddie Howe wants to do that but I’m not sure if that feeling is coming back to him.

“I’d be fighting if I was a player at Crystal Palace and I was wanting to go to Newcastle.”
