'I've heard...' - Chris Jack shares if Rangers are headed for a takeover

Rangers are more likely to see minority external investment rather than somebody buying the club, says Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist said on the outlet’s YouTube channel on 11 October that he’s heard nothing to suggest the club are at the stage or a takeover happening, and believes outside finance is more likely to arrive on a similar basis as current shareholders.

There have been rumours of Far East interest and a full takeover has been cited as necessary to end the fragmented ownership structure at Ibrox [PLZ Soccer, 23 September], but Jack suggests that isn’t expected at this stage.

He said (9m 20s): “If you’ve got that money to put into Rangers you want to decide how it’s going to be spent. If you want to decide how it’s going to be spent you have to have that shareholding to give you that boardroom influence, either as chairman or to have a couple of directors on the board.

“So there’s two types of investment that we could look at it. I’ve heard nothing to suggest that Rangers are at the takeover stage…

“For Rangers to really bridge that gap it will require a level of external finance, and that’s something that Dave King mentioned when I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago, and it’s where is that finance going to come from?

“Is it going to come from the guys that are there already or is it going to come from new people coming in? If it’s going to come from new people coming in I think it will be on the same terms as we’ve seen previously rather than somebody coming in and saying, ‘I want to buy and run Rangers’.”

Dave King claims he can bring US and Saudi investment to Rangers

It will likely come as a disappointment to significant parts of the Gers fanbase for a takeover not to be in the offing.

There is a huge amount of dissatisfaction with how the current regime has allowed the situation to disintegrate in the three seasons since lifting title 55.

Former chairman King has made a lot of noise since John Bennett’s enforced resignation on medical grounds, talking up the potential to take advantage of interest from Saudi Arabia and the USA as part of his candidacy as an interim option [Rangers Review, 15 September].

But, while the South Africa-based businessman, who remains the largest shareholder at Rangers, has support from some quarters he may not have it where it matters most, among current executives.

Should a single party arrive on the scene with the finances and wherewithal to buy out King, Bennett and as many other minority owners as required for full control then some serious conversations would need to be had.

A major injection of cash looks like it is needed to springboard Rangers closer to Celtic but that is a lot easier said than done, and there will be inevitable fears around the club falling into the wrong hands.

As things stand it looks like it is going to be a slow and steady climb back towards the top, but whether that is enough when the Hoops’ financial supremacy widens with each season remains to be seen.
