'I've heard...' - Ferguson rubbishes behind-the-scenes chatter about Rangers

Barry Ferguson has hit back at claims of Rangers being “rudderless” as he believes John Gilligan and George Letham will be doing their “utmost” to get the club through this tough period.

The Gers find themselves third in the Scottish Premiership and bowed out of the Champions League in qualifying after they lost to Dynamo Kyiv over two legs.

Although things could have certainly gone better for the Ibrox outfit, Ferguson believes improvements are coming to the club.

“I’ve heard a lot of folk claiming the club has been rudderless and lacked direction since John Bennett and James Bisgrove stepped down. But that’s simply not the case,” Ferguson wrote in the print edition of the Daily Record [page 51, 11 October].

“John Gilligan is back as chairman and has George Letham in there assisting him in the interim period as they complete the search for the new man to lead the board and another to take on the chief exec post.

“Both these guys are committed Rangers men and will do their utmost to help the club through this difficult period. And they’ve both pledged to stay on board for as long as it takes to find the right people for some of the biggest jobs at Ibrox”.

Rangers need to buck up their performances soon

As aforementioned, the Gers’ season hasn’t quite gone to plan for any of those involved at the club.

Rangers are third in the Scottish Premiership and although Philippe Clement knows his team are better than that, things haven’t quite clicked.

Since their 3-0 loss to Celtic on 1 September, things started to look up for the club somewhat as they managed to win a handful of games on the bounce.

However, it seems like the Gers reverted to their old ways after their 4-1 home loss against Lyon in the Europa League.

Whenever the Gers seem to take a step forward, something always seems to send them two back and it feels like no progress is being made.

Granted, John Bennett’s sudden resignation due to health reasons [The Athletic, 14 September] and Creag Robertson’s impending resignation [Scottish Daily Mail, 9 October, page 69] likely haven’t helped matters much so not everything can be blamed upon Clement and his men.

However, as the club now seems to have stagnated on the pitch, questions will start to be asked, especially if things don’t turn around soon.

In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson believes the Gers could lose more of their backroom staff this season.
