Viktor Gyokeres emerged as a wanted man in the summer transfer window but remained at Sporting CP.
The Swedish striker has a release clause worth £86m (€100m) and has already notched up 15 goals and assists for club and country this season.
Arsenal’s interest in Gyokeres is well documented, but the Gunners didn’t pursue a move for him, with Raheem Sterling’s loan signing on deadline day their only attacking reinforcement in the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old didn’t get a move but continues to have keen admirers across Europe, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that Tottenham Hotspur have also kept tabs on Gyokeres.
And now, Sporting President Frederico Varandas has revealed exactly what the Swede feels after a transfer failed to materialise over the summer.
Viktor Gyokeres happy at Sporting amid Arsenal transfer links
As cited by Portuguese newspaper Record, Varandas says clubs that want to sign the striker must pay his £86m release clause.
“A €100m clause and whether it can be met depends on the player’s current situation, age, and whether there is more than one club in the running.
“I’ve seen inferior players being transferred for over €100m and great players for under €100m. Sporting is happy to have Viktor and he is happy here. During the transfer market, there wasn’t a day without news saying that Viktor was leaving.
“The transfer market closed and these questions continue. But hey, we live with it and that’s how it will be.”
Arsenal could rekindle a move for Gyokeres in 2025
Arsenal currently have enough numbers in attack but could be in the market for a bonafide goalscorer in the upcoming windows.
While Kai Havertz has performed admirably for the club after overcoming a slow start, his tally of 13 Premier League goals last season isn’t good enough for a team competing on all fronts.
Gabriel Jesus, on the other hand, scored just four Premier League goals last season and continues to struggle with injuries.
Gyokeres is one of the most lethal strikers in world football and it wouldn’t come as a big surprise if Arsenal – or any other top club in Europe – makes a move for him in the future.
