Rangers have set an “astronomical” price tag on Jack Butland as alarm bells ring over the club’s financial situation, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke explained that Philippe Clement’s £30million valuation for the goalkeeper is likely to put off any interested clubs.
The club will look to raise money through player sales this summer, but by pricing Butland so high, they are unlikely to cash in on one of their major sellable assets.
While this will see Clement’s team keep a star player at Ibrox, it will do no favours in terms of strengthening the squad to push on, causing concerns among supporters.
Pressure is mounting both on the manager and the board to close the gap to Celtic, but their financial concerns are proving an obstacle.
Jack Butland transfer news sets off alarm bells at Rangers
Rangers need to sell players before they can buy this summer, with Clement recently confirming that every player is up for sale at the right price.
This comment, however, did not include Butland, with the club desperate to hold on to last season’s Player of the Year despite his high resale value.
Butland arrived at Ibrox for free last summer after leaving Crystal Palace and quickly established himself as a vital component of the team.
Last season, he featured 58 times across all competitions and helped Rangers to lift the Scottish League Cup despite falling short in the Scottish Cup and the League.
He remains a vital part of Clement’s plan and will not be allowed to leave despite interest from clubs in England.
However, this could cause further issues for Rangers if they are unable to shift some of their fringe players to make space for new arrivals.
Football Insider revealed that both Connor Goldson and James Tavernier have been made available and have held talks over moves away, but alarm bells continue to ring at Ibrox given the financial situation.
In other news, Rangers fans are raging at the board after the latest Sam Lammers news.
