Stefan Borson: FSG to pursue new Liverpool agreement after off-pitch deal collapses

Liverpool’s owners will “definitely” continue their pursuit of a new club to buy despite their latest deal collapsing.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Fenway Sports Group (FSG) could move to secure another deal in France as they look to begin their multi-club model.

John Henry’s company appointed Michael Edwards as its chief executive of football earlier this year, with the offer including him helping to identify and manage a second club.

FSG were in talks to buy Bordeaux, but it has emerged the Boston-based firm has now pulled out of the negotiations.

The French side revealed in a statement on 16 July FSG cited future maintenance costs of the stadium, plus the general uncertainty over the financial stability of football in the country.

But Borson believes the Liverpool owners could look to strike another deal in France due to the potential value on offer.

He told Football Insider: “They definitely will go back in after making it clear they are going to buy.

“It’s just a question of who and where. I suspect they will go back to France.

“If you look at what’s happened in France with this new TV deal, the payout is a very little amount per season.

“Those clubs are going to be in a level of distress.

“I think most multi-club operations will look to have a club in France because they will get good value.

“It’s historically been a good source of player, the league is of a standard that’s good enough to get the players good experience and geographically it’s close to England.”
