Manchester United have taken a “massive gamble” after spending big money on the signing of teenage defender Leny Yoro this summer.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s surprising Man United have forked out such a hefty fee on the 18-year-old due to his limited experience.
The Premier League giants confirmed the signing of Yoro from French club Lille on 18 July in a deal worth £52.2million, with £6.8million in add-ons.
The centre-back made 60 appearances for Lille after making his professional debut in May 2022, having made 44 outings last season.
The France Under-21 international had been linked with Real Madrid and PSG before Man United persuaded him to make the move to Old Trafford.
Leny Yoro could face challenge adapting after Man United move
Borson believes it will be a “big challenge” for Yoro to adapt to the Premier League at such a young age despite his potential.
“It’s a lot of money they have spent,” Borson told Football Insider.
“Apparently, he’s a very good player. Very few people watch French football as we know because they have just struggled to do their TV deal.
“We know people are not particularly well versed on players from the outside. The scouts have clearly watched him and he was highly rated.
“The fee looks very big for an 18-year-old player, who has only ever played in France and has only had one season of proper experience given his age.
“Coming to the Premier League will be a big challenge. I think it’s a surprising deal on that basis.
“To pay that kind of fee for a player of 18 that’s never played outside of France is a massive gamble.
“United fans are very pleased with the signing as you would expect, but it’s clearly a massive gamble.”
