James Tavernier: Alan Hutton drops emphatic Rangers transfer update

James Tavernier is now likely to stay at Rangers following new developments, according to Alan Hutton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Ibrox defender bemoans how much experience Rangers have already lost this summer and replacing the 32-year-old would be ‘very difficult’.

Football Insider revealed (July 21) that Tavernier had agreed personal terms with Turkish club Trabzonspor but is now being backed to remain in Scotland.

The player himself has stressed his commitment to the club and admits he is “living the dream” at the Ibrox in an interview with Ranger’s in-house social media team.

Now, with it looking more likely that he will remain at Ibrox, fans are divided on whether to stick by Tavernier or to continue the close scrutiny of his performances.

Captain James Tavernier backed to stay at Rangers

Since joining the club in 2015, Tavernier has been one of Rangers’ best players having scored an impressive 125 goals in 462 appearances from right-back.

Last season was his most prolific, the set-piece maestro netted 24 goals in 58 games across all competitions.

“I do feel that he’ll stay now”, Hutton told Football Insider.

“There was a point where I thought he could be away when there were whispers about Goldson and himself leaving.

“We know Goldson is gone, I just think Rangers have lost a lot of experience this summer in terms of the first-team squad, and if Tavernier were to leave as well it would be very difficult to replace him.

“I know they’ve got (Dujon) Sterling who can play at right-back, even though I think he’s even better in midfield.

“The goals that he (Tavernier) provides and the assists he come up with, his numbers are incredible over a number of years.

“This would be his tenth season, so I really do feel that he will want to stay for this one.

“He’s a big character in the dressing room and on the pitch so I feel that he’s going to stay for this season anyway.”
