Jamie Carragher names the two players who Ruben Amorim cannot play together at wing-back for Man United

Jamie Carragher has told Ruben Amorim that Manchester United have two players who cannot play together at wing-back.

Amorim has had real issues selcting suitable wing backs for his system since arriving at Old Trafford although it is becoming increasily clear the type of players he needs for these roles.

Ahead of Manchester United’s crushing defeat at home to Newcastle, Carragher urged the new Portugese coach to make a change at wing-back.

Jamie Carragher claims Mazraoui and Dalot aren’t wing-backs

Jamie Carragher is admanat that Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot aren’t wing-backs and Ruben Amorim must add more attacking players out wide. Mazraoui and Dalot are both tradional full-backs and don’t offer a great deal going forward.

Wing-back is an area where a lot of the cerativity needs to come from in Amorim’s team and Carragher claims that Mazraoui and Dalot ‘don’t think like attacking full-backs’. Carragher said on Sky Sports: “It’s a massive problem and that tells you have to play one of them in the wingback role. This is obviously a game which they win at Manchester City, but we see the system. Mazraoui and Dalot as the wing backs. In the back five, that’s fine, we just see Amad in that position.

“But when there’s a turnover, look at Martinez, he’s actually telling Dalot you’ve got to get ahead of this [Man City player], you’re a wing back now, you’re not a full-back. Martinez is having to tell him to get forward and he’s just walking and that’s the difference, they don’t think like attacking full-backs.”

Man United’s record with Mazraoui or Dalot compared to Diallo or Antony

Manchester United are yet to score when either Dalot or Mazraoui have featured in the right wing back role despite playing 276 with one of them there. Meanwhile, when Amad Diallo or Antony have played there, the Red Devils have score nine times in 354 minutes.

It’s just goes to show the importance of having a more attack-minded player featuring in the wing-back roles and maybe it’s something they even need to address in January.
