Stefan Borson clarifies Everton v Man Utd COVID losses situation as fans get 'little defensive'

Stefan Borson has cleared up some confusion surrounding COVID losses at Everton after Manchester United fans became a “little defensive”.

The finance expert featured on talkSPORT on Tuesday 6 August, speaking about how Man United were given an “exceptional” allowance of £40million during the 2021/22 season, while the most any other club received was £1million.

Now, Borson has revealed the numbers behind the Toffees’ financial situation throughout the last three seasons, one that saw the club docked a total of eight points for two separate PSR breaches.

Taking to X on Wednesday (7 August), he explained that, while the Red Devils did account for 20-25 per cent of all permitted Premier League PSR COVID allowables, Everton successfully claimed £82million during the three seasons included in the recent PSR assessment.

Borson has also admitted that the Toffees were “one of the highest COVID claimers”, also attempting to claim an additional £88million for player trading “losses”, which was rejected.

Everton v Manchester United situation laid to bed after Stefan Borson confusion

Given how the Toffees were thrust into another relegation battle again for much of last season, it is understandable to see so many rival fans arguing their case for the situation.

While the Red Devils’ claim of £40million in 2022 may have far exceeded any other club’s that year, it has become clear that a lot more allowances were claimed in the two other seasons included in the most recent PSR assessment.

The financial side of football is a wormhole ready and waiting for any fan to get lost down, and after the punishments handed to Everton and Nottingham Forest last season, very few will understand exactly what goes on behind the scenes.

PSR has still been a very important talking point during the summer transfer window, with clubs opting to sell academy products to make the most profit possible from player sales.

Either way, most fans will agree that the current rules desperately need changing, but it could be a while until supporters see change given the need to find an acceptable new measurement.

In other Everton news, Alan Myers has issued an update as the Toffees now want to sign a £25m-rated ‘Explosive’ central midfielder.
