Fraser Forster looked like a “wardrobe” as he gifted two goals to Manchester United as Tottenham beat them 4-3 in the EFL Cup on Thursday, according to Jim White.
Writing in The Telegraph (20 December), the journalist said that Forster should not try to play out from the back, having come up as an old-school goalkeeper.
White went on to raise Lionel Messi and Keir Starmer examples as he hit out at Ange Postecoglou for insisting on building up from the back despite his goalkeeper not being comfortable with it.
“Poor Fraser Forster. A goalkeeper with all the dexterity of a wardrobe was twice ruthlessly hunted down by men in red as he failed catastrophically in the attempt to unleash his inner Lionel Messi”, he wrote.
“An old school keeper, brought up in the days when the goalie’s job was simply to launch it, he looked about as comfortable in the Ange Postecoglou era of insisting that every attack begins at the keeper’s feet as Sir Keir Starmer does when presenting a new government initiative.”
Fraser Forster has night to forget in Tottenham v Manchester United
Postecoglou has often come under criticism for refusing to change his playing style according to the opposition and the players available.
Spurs’ first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is comfortable with the ball at his feet, but the Italian is sidelined with an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, Forster is known more as a shot-stopper than a modern-day goalkeeper, meaning he is not the best with the ball.
Therefore, it is not a surprise that the 36-year-old was targeted by the Manchester United players on Thursday.
Forster’s errors could have cost Tottenham a place in the semi-final of the EFL Cup.
Postecoglou and co have a mistake by the veteran’s United counterpart Altay Bayindir to thank for progressing further in the competition.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if the North London club will be tempted to sign a new backup goalkeeper when the January transfer window opens in less than two weeks.
They have notably been credited with an interest in Botafogo’s John Victor [CaughtOffside].
