Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson looks as though he could be in trouble in North London.
Spurs advanced to the last four of the Carabao Cup by beating Manchester United 4-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday [19 December] in a match which wasn’t short of controversy.
However, despite the club’s recent injury crisis, which seems to be easing after Ange Postecoglou’s update on one player [via Football London, 20 December], there was no room in the starting lineup for Spurs’ top scorer Johnson.
He also wasn’t introduced until the 90th minute, and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks this could be bad news for the Welshman.
“Johnson’s late introduction felt quite telling,” Wenham said.
“It seemed as though Postecoglou didn’t feel comfortable bringing him on until the fourth goal had been scored, which is a bit worrying when it comes to Johnson’s position in the squad.
“United were able to make a host of changes and freshen things up, whereas Postecoglou kept looking toward his bench and wasn’t making any changes, which was met by frustration in the ground.”
Brennan Johnson in trouble at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?
Johnson has 10 goals in all competitions this season, and at one point this season was one of the first names on Postecoglou’s teamsheets.
Therefore, it seems rather odd that the Spurs boss waited so long to bring the forward on against United, especially considering the lack of options available to him.
Perhaps he was resting Johnson to avoid any further injury issues. However, the 23-year-old was also benched for Spurs’ previous match, the 5-0 Premier League win over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday [15 December].
His recent omissions could be a result of his miserable display the last time he started as Spurs drew 1-1 with Rangers in the UEFA Europa League at Ibrox on Thursday 12 December.
However, it is currently unclear exactly why he isn’t starting.
