John Bennett ready to splash cash for Rangers transfers after Clement talks - report

Philippe Clement has been assured that there is money to spend at Rangers this summer by John Bennett, according to the Daily Record.

Andrew Newport reported via the paper’s website on 14 June that the executive chairman has made clear that the board are ready to “dig deep if required” as the manager and his head of recruitment Nils Koppen look to overhaul the Light Blues squad.

Koppen is said to have been “assessing numbers and speaking with agents” for months ahead of the transfer window.

And Bennett, whose job title was altered in the wake of the shock exit of CEO James Bisgrove to Saudi Arabia, has communicated to Clement that the cash will be made available for him to follow up on targets.

Clement and Koppen have looked to move quickly at the start of the summer as a deal was quickly wrapped up to bring in January left-back target Jefte, and a return for loanee Oscar Cortes on a loan-to-buy deal followed.

Leon Balogun has had his contract extended while a host of first-team players have been allowed to depart as their own deals expired, and youngster Clinton Nsiala has been secured from AC Milan.

But if Rangers are to come out of the summer ready to depose Celtic, having thrown away the chance to do so last season, there looks to be plenty more work required.

Coming 12 months after Michael Beale was tasked with revamping the Gers for the exact same purpose and failed there would be inevitable fears that the money isn’t there to do so.

So it is a positive that Bennett is willing to let another manager embark on significant spending already.

But that will mean the pressure is on more than ever to get it right this time around as the finances will only be getting tighter if Rangers continue to fall short of their Old Firm rivals, not least if they have to change manager every season.

So there are bound to notable sales made to help fund the signings that are still needed, with the squad potentially looking very different by the time next season kicks off.
