John Wenham speculates 'loyalty bonus' reason behind Tottenham player exit on free transfer

John Wenham has questioned the decision by Tottenham to release Japhet Tanganga.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast, Lilywhite Rose, believes the North London side could have activated the one-year option in the defender’s contract and sold him for a fee.

Tanganga is one of several players set to leave the club this summer upon the expiration of their contracts.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has speculated the reason why the 24-year-old might have been let go.

“I found it very strange that they allowed Tanganga to leave for free,” Wenham said.

“They could have certainly sold him for £2-3million.

“Perhaps they might have had to pay him some sort of loyalty bonus as a result of activating the option on his contract, I’m not sure.

“I was slightly surprised, but there must have been a reason behind the decision.”

It was recently reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (12 May) that Spurs and Millwall had reached an agreement over the permanent transfer of Tanganga.

Fast forward a couple of weeks later, and the defender was let go for free.

With a fee with another club seemingly agreed, this would have raised a few eyebrows as Daniel Levy appeared to turn down the opportunity to make some money.

If there is truth behind the suggestion of bonus payments needing to be made, then perhaps the fee agreed with Millwall was no longer economically beneficial.

However, it is unlikely that the reasoning behind the decision to release Tanganga will ever become clear.

What is clear is that he is no longer a Tottenham player and must now look to find a new club ahead of next season as a result of his release.
