Alan Hutton has admitted that he doesn’t expect Troy Parrott to be the solution to Ange Postecoglou’s striker problem during the summer transfer window.

The Irish international finished his loan spell with Eredivisie side Excelsior in excellent form, scoring seven goals in his last three appearances before finding the net for his national side in their 2-1 friendly win over Hungary.

Parrott’s good run of form has seen some suggest he could be handed another chance under Postecoglou this summer, particularly as the Spurs boss is keen to secure a new number nine in the summer transfer window.

While Hutton admits that he hopes to see the 22-year-old be given a second crack of the whip at Spurs, he doesn’t believe Parrott has what it takes to replace Harry Kane and fire the Lilywhites back into the top four.

“I’m not sure, but of course, he’s a good player,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“It’s no slight on him because he’s shown that he can go and score goals and he’s an international footballer, but is he going to be that guy who will come in, be the new Harry Kane and score 20 to 25 goals every single season?

“Is he going to score in the Champions League when they get there? Is he going to be that go-to guy? I’m not sure he is, as it sits.

“I hope he goes and proves me wrong, I hope he goes, gets his opportunity and scores a barrel load. But I’m just thinking as it is at this moment in time I don’t see him doing that.

“That’s the reason they’re looking at strikers, Ange will know better than I will, but Parrott will have an opportunity and it’s just whether he can grasp it or not.”

Will Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sign a new striker in the summer transfer window?

Parrott’s overall record in the Netherlands was excellent as he managed to score 17 goals and lay on a further five assists in 32 appearances for a side that was ultimately relegated from the Eredivisie via the playoffs.

But it still doesn’t hold a candle to the exploits of Kane in north London or even alternative targets like Dominic Solanke and Ivan Toney. If Spurs are serious about rebuilding under Postecoglou, they need to spend big on a quality number nine.

With Richarlison set to stay and Son Heung-min and Timo Werner able to deputise as number nines if required, there will be no place for Parrott in the first team squad and that could push him towards the exit door.

There will always be a sense of what might have been if things had panned out differently for the 22-year-old, but Spurs should cash in now while his stock is high.
