The majority of Everton fans could be frustrated very soon by the expected result of a vote by Premier League clubs on whether to scrap VAR.

According to The Times‘ Martyn Ziegler [5 June], the vote – initiated by Wolverhampton Wanderers whose fortunes were found wanting by numerous reviewed decisions this season – is set to see clubs vote in favour of keeping the system, albeit requesting improvements.

Wolves sent a six-page document illustrating 10 key disadvantages to the current concept to the Premier League, who are set to send a list of improvements to PGMOL to be worked on in order to satisfy the majority of the 20 clubs affected.

However, 55% of Everton fans who participated in a recent survey with The Athletic [17 May] were in favour of scrapping VAR – with only five Premier League fanbases swaying towards a ‘no’ vote.

Many Everton fans want away with VAR – it’s entirely understandable

Not a single blame can be attached to football fans who want VAR gone.

Since its inception in the Premier League for the 2019-20 season, it has been inconsistent at best and downright farcical at worst, and several of Wolves’ arguments towards ending the process in the English top flight are flagrantly easy to get on board with.

It is, however, the PGMOL’s shiny toy and the issue here is how far apart we are between idea and execution.

Everton were involved in one of the most high-profile VAR controversies in 2023-24 in their game with Nottingham Forest and it has turned out to be something of a springboard to enforce action by Wolves and potentially other Premier League clubs. Their season also ended with a controversial VAR call to allow Kai Havertz’s late winner against the Toffees for Arsenal on the final day of term.

The over-involvement of VAR to go beyond what is just ‘”clear and obvious”; the lack of a semi-automated “offside technology” which is said to be in the works, and the lack of speed and clarity in decisions – making the system incompatible with match-going supporters – need to be seriously ironed out in order to make VAR a success in this country.

The teething problems have gone on far, far too long now.
