Ibrox Exclusive: Rangers open preliminary talks to sign 68 PL-app star

Rangers have made preliminary contact with Norwich City regarding a potential deal for Kenny McLean, sources have told Football Insider.

The Gers are in the market for an experienced and quality central midfielder, and are hoping for a Steven Davis-type player, and McLean fits that bill.

The 32-year-old has two more years left on his current Norwich contract, where the Scottish international has been since 2018.

Another potential sticking point in the deal is that, according to sources, his salary of over £30K per week would be considered high by Rangers standards.

McLean is an experienced midfielder though, having made 228 appearances for Norwich alone in the Premier League and the Championship, with 68 of them coming in the English top flight.

He’s also played over 250 games in the Scottish Premiership across his spells with Aberdeen and St Mirren, scoring 36 goals in Scotland’s top flight.

Rangers have been busy so far in this window

The Gers have been very active in the summer window as the club attempts to close the gap between them and Celtic next season.

Rangers have already completed four new signings with, Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, and Connor Barron all arriving at Ibrox, while Oscar Cortes’ loan deal has also been extended.

Football Insider revealed that the Scottish outfit has also had a bid accepted for Bayern Munich winger Yusuf Kabadayi.

While there’s also interest in him from Turkey, Rangers have been given the green light to talk with him, and the deal is said to be “very advanced.”

Rangers are also nearing a deal to re-sign Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly, which could open the door for Jack Butland to exit the club.

Elsewhere, Football Insider confirmed that the Gers are among multiple clubs considering a move for West Ham United right-back Ben Johnson.
