Jose Mourinho could turn down the chance to join Everton in favour of remaining in his job at Fenerbahce following Dan Friedkin’s takeover.
This is according to former Man United, Tottenham and Sunderland scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the former United boss would be reluctant to leave his current job.
Mourinho, 61, joined Fenerbahce in June after his departure from Roma in January and is already revered by the passionate supporters of the Turkish giants.
His side currently sits fourth in the Super Lig after winning five, drawing one and losing one of their opening seven games this season.
While at Roma, he worked closely with potential new Everton owner Friedkin – who confirmed an agreement to buy Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1% stake in the club subject to approval – and as a result, has been heavily linked with taking over at Goodison Park.
Football Insider revealed on 3 October that Mourinho is a “strong option” to take over from Sean Dyche once Friedkin completes his takeover.
This comes amid growing pressure on Dyche’s position given Everton’s slow start to the season and concerns about the level of their performances.
Jose Mourinho to turn down Everton job after new twist
Brown previously told Football Insider that Friedkin could move quickly to replace Dyche with an “all-singing-all-dancing” boss following their takeover.
However, the former scout, who remains well-connected at some of Mourinho’s former clubs, has explained that the boss is unlikely to be that man – unless he decides he wants to take on a new challenge in England.
“I could see them wanting to bring him in,” he told Football Insider.
“But I’ve heard he wouldn’t be so keen. Would he want to take over at Everton?
“Given his status in Turkey and the comfort zone he is in there, would he want to come back to a struggling and unstable side in England?
“Knowing him, maybe he would take that chance, but I’ve heard it’s unlikely.
“I think they’ve got to be very careful how they handle the Dyche situation because he’s done really well for them since he took over.
“They have to be careful what they wish for.“
