Andy Dunn believes Sean Dyche’s “pragmatism” might not be enough for him to keep his role as Everton manager beyond the end of the season.
The Englishman has had a few decent results over the last couple of weeks with the Toffees as they’ve managed to etch out draws against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.
They’re also still 15th in the Premier League table but thanks to their run of draws, their cushion between themselves and the relegation zone is slowly increasing.
Writing for the Daily Mirror in their print edition (27 December, page 57) Dunn shared why Dyche might not have enough to convince new owner Dan Friedkin that he’s the right man for the job.
“They are not the prettiest side to watch but Sean Dyche has at least restored the difficult-to-beat element, even if attacking ingenuity is at a premium,” he wrote.
“In the long term, Dyche’s pragmatism might not be enough to convince the new owners, The Friedkin Group, that he is the right man for what Everton supporters hope is a brave new era”.
Sean Dyche has to do more to prove his worth at Everton
Although Everton’s recent results against some of the Premier League’s title-challenging teams have been impressive, it feels like more could still come from the Merseyside outfit.
There have been times this season when fans have called for the head of Dyche and while most now seem to be back on his side, it feels like things could still be better.
The Toffees’ defence seems like it’s more than capable of making its way into a battle for a top-half finish but Everton’s strikers have majorly let them down over the course of the 2024/25 season.
Both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto have performed well below par and even though Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti are now back from their long-term injuries, it’s unknown whether they’ll have the impact on Dyche’s team that he desires.
If the 53-year-old wants to keep his role at Goodison Park, he’s going to have to prove to Dan Friedkin that he’s irreplaceable and that he can get the best out of his players, otherwise, it feels unlikely that he’ll be offered an extension to his tenure.
