Alasdair Lamont believes Neraysho Kasanwirjo would be a better choice at centre-back than Robin Propper if Leon Balogun isn’t fit enough to play each game.
Kasanwirjo and Propper were brought in during the summer transfer window as part of the Gers’ first-team shake-up.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (13 November) Lamont thinks Kasanwirjo – who has mainly been used at full-back – should come into centre-back if Balogun is unable to play given the struggles Propper has endured.
“The bold decision from Clement to replace James Tavernier with Dujon Sterling in Athens was one I said last week felt necessary,” he wrote.
“And though Tavernier returned to the starting XI against Hearts, Sterling or even Neraysho Kasanwirjo probably deserve a run in the team.
“Kasanwirjo would arguably be a better option than Robin Propper at centre-back if Leon Balogun cannot play every game”.
Neraysho Kasanwirjo deserves an extended run in Rangers starting XI
Since his arrival towards the latter end of the summer transfer window, Kasanwirjo hasn’t been as involved as he likely would’ve wanted to be.
Clement introduced a fair few new faces to his defensive line such as Propper and Jefte and while some have hit the ground running, others haven’t quite got there just yet.
When the Dutchman has been chosen by Clement, however, the 22-year-old has always put in a more than decent shift despite not yet chipping in with a goal or an assist.
He’s been deployed all across the defensive line but his speed, athleticism, and ability to read danger means he could be very useful at centre-back.
Propper has had his fair share of chances this season and frankly it is a move that just has not worked out and supporters get understandably nervous when he is in the starting XI.
Only time will tell what Clement chooses to do but as Balogun is now getting into the latter stages of his career, it could be worthwhile for the Belgian to rest him on the odd occasion and save him for the more high-pressure games.
