Ross McCormack has “sympathy” for Cyriel Dessers amid his hit-and-miss form for Rangers again this season.
The Nigeria international is the Gers’ top scorer this term but has once again faced criticism over a perceived profligacy in front of goal.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (12 November), former Gers forward McCormack shared his verdict on the 29-year-old’s performances this season.
“I’ve got a little bit of sympathy with Dessers because I like strikers who put themselves in those sorts of situations time and time again,” he said.
“I go back to the year Celtic stopped Rangers getting 10 in a row and there was a guy playing upfront called Harald Brattbakk for Celtic and he was quite similar to be honest.
“Chance after chance he would miss but he would never shy away, he put his body on the line and he would be in between the six-yard box waiting for those chances.
“The only sort of thing with Dessers for me is that he seems to be a reactive striker, I expect him to score when he hasn’t got time to think about it”.
Cyriel Dessers needs to improve in the final third for Rangers
As aforementioned, Dessers may well be Philippe Clement’s top scorer once again this season but it feels like so much more could come from the attacker.
There have been countless opportunities this season when Dessers could have sent his team two or three goals ahead in games and he’s ended up fluffing his chance.
At the moment, there aren’t too many options for the number nine role in the side due to Hamza Igamane’s unreadiness and the fact that Danilo is only just returning from injury.
This is likely one of the reasons the Belgian has stuck by Dessers for most games this term but now the Brazilian is getting reintegrated into the squad, it feels like his time could be up unless he manages to somehow become clinical overnight.
If the Gers want to mount a title challenge this term, a striker has to once again be the priority in January.
