Alasdair Lamont says Rangers fans would have been “seething” at the thought of being nine points behind not only Celtic but Aberdeen in November at the start of the 2024/25 season.
The Gers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership and have already lost once in the league to both of their title rivals this term.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (13 November) BBC journalist Lamont shared his thoughts on the performance of Philippe Clement’s men so far.
“If you had informed the Rangers support at the start of the season that by the mid-November international break they would be nine points behind Aberdeen, not only would not a single one of them have believed you, but they would have rightly been seething at the very thought,” he wrote.
“There is little doubt they have been third best so far this campaign, saving their best performances for the European stage as they did again last week, performing well to earn a valuable away point against Olympiacos before turning in a turgid display in securing victory over Hearts”.
Philippe Clement is holding onto his Rangers job by a thread
Time and time again this season the future of Clement has been discussed by fans and pundits alike with most in agreeance that his time at Ibrox is almost up.
It feels like there have been one too many times this term where the Belgian has led his team out and they’ve put in a poor performance, particularly in high-pressure games.
Somewhat surprisingly the Gers’ form in Europe has been better than what most expected with wins against both FCSB and Malmo being the highlights of their campaign thus far.
In games such as those, it feels like Clement has a clear plan and an idea of how he wants the team to play.
But then in others, it feels like his decision-making has been way off the mark and the club seems to go back to square one.
If the 50-year-old wants to keep his job, he needs to find a formula that can be replicated across all competitions otherwise things could go from bad to worse rather quickly.
